Carrying the songs - Hamilton Gallery
Poem for a jug
At the initiative of the Irish Embassy in the Netherlands, Hamilton Gallery in Sligo (Ireland), and Pulchri Studio, a new show is scheduled featuring work by Irish and Dutch artists on the theme 'Carrying the Songs', named after the
poem of Moya Cannon.
In my still life
Poem for a jug – featuring a pewter jug and deep orange roses against a bright yellow background – I approach the theme of cultural memory and displacement through objects. In this work, I reconstruct a modernist painting by William Scott using exclusively secondhand materials – objects that have already known a previous life.
Just like the songs in Moya Cannon's poem, which are exchanged, adapted, and sung again, so these secondhand materials are cherished, moved, and reused. In doing so, they embody an anonymous history and function as carriers of memories, just as music transcends boundaries and time. The secondhand jug and the artificial roses in the floral still life are placed in a new context. Reinterpreted, they carry within them the echoes of their former history.
The work is part of my
Preserved series: floral still lifes from bygone eras in various art historical styles made with materials from the thrift store.
