One elegant tulip
Exhibition Small Format at Pulchri Studio - fall 2025
For this new flower still life, entitled
Tulip in a Vase with Butterfly, I was inspired by a painting by Balthasar van der Ast, which he made around 1625. It appealed to me because of its effective simplicity. A vase with one elegant tulip. The scene features a butterfly and a fly: the butterfly as a metaphor for transformation, rebirth and for the soul leaving the body; the fly as a sign of decay and the inevitability of death. Together they depict the vulnerable boundary between life and death, between the spiritual and the earthly – a recurring theme in Dutch still lifes from the 17th century.
Tulip in a Vase with Butterfly can be seen and purchased from 26 August at Pulchri Studio in the exhibition 'Small Format'. An exhibition formula where the work can be taken home immediately after purchase. So you don't have to wait until the end of the exhibition period. It can also be purchased in the
