Between - Art Series

This series, titled 'Between', is characterized by layering, the use of textiles, and sometimes 3D elements. The works play with interstitial spaces and the interplay between visible and hidden layers. Playing with the tension between fragility, strength, and control proves to be a recurring theme. Flowers and botanical elements are a recurring motif in my work. They carry a layered symbolism within them – interwoven with historical and mystical meanings and an intuitive, personal fascination.

The basis for the works in this series lies in my studio. There, I create 'hanging compositions,' as temporary mini-installations. The creative process is characterized by a pleasure in precision: choosing the materials, experimenting with form and color, and applying subtle placements and shifts in objects and light. 'Every centimeter counts as I shape my compositions, constantly repositioning to find the perfect result for me. It is a process of subtle nuances. I pay attention to every detail.'

Historical connotations form an important source of inspiration, in which stories and references from the past are subtly interwoven. For the series ‘Beween’, I found inspiration in Symbolism, among other places, with a particular focus on the work of Odilon Redon. In 1900-1901, this French painter created a series of panels featuring loose flowers and branches that seem to float in a vacuum without specific space or time. The unmistakable Japanese influences, the serene contemplative atmosphere, and the symbolic function of flowers and colors shine through in my series. Redon said of his work: 'My paintings cannot be defined. They place us, just like music, in the ambiguous realm of the indeterminate.'

The title of the series originates from a poem by Corina Engelbrecht. There is something essential hidden in the word ‘between’: something that cannot be easily named or captured.
