BETWEEN || BETWEEN
First solo exhibition at Pulchri Studio
In this exhibition, I am showing mostly new work from my ongoing series Between. This series is characterized by layering and the use of textiles. The works play with in-between spaces and the interplay between visible and hidden layers. Flowers and botanical elements form a recurring motif. They carry an instant symbolism—interwoven with historical and mystical meanings and an intuitive, personal fascination.
I found inspiration for this series of works in Symbolism, among other places, with a particular focus on the work of Odilon Redon. In 1900-1901, this French painter created a series of groundbreaking panels featuring loose flowers and branches that seem to float in a vacuum without specific space or time. Redon on his work: “My paintings cannot be defined. They place us in the realm of the indeterminate.”
Performance and recitation artist Anita Poolman will open the exhibition on October 3rd. In doing so, she will pay special attention to a poem by Corina Engelbrecht, which is closely connected to the exhibition and its title.
