In the display cabinet

In the 'Vitrine van Vertoon' of the Haagse Kunstkring I exhibit work that is part of my Preserved project with flower still lifes. The 'Vitrine van Vertoon' is in fact the display window of Haagse Kunstkring, situated in the hallway.

The Preserved project started when I wanted to donate some stuff to the local thrift store. While I was there, an artificial flower in a vase caught my eye. It occurred to me then that that flower is a kind of time machine in itself. A way to 'preserve' nature. If you think about it, artificial flowers are nothing more than man's fragile attempt to capture in plastic and fabric the most beautiful thing nature has to offer.

I build on this idea by recreating bouquets with artificial flowers, vases and props from thrift stores. I find it fascinating to combine all the individual flowers that were once lovingly bought and used by so many different people in one work. This makes them a little bit human in a strange way. In order to emphasize the conservational character of the project, I use flower still lifes from periods in art and culture as a source of inspiration.
