Pulchri Studio - Small Format - Fall 2025

One elegant tulip

For this new flower still life, titled "Tulip in a Vase with Butterfly," I drew inspiration from a painting by Balthasar van der Ast, created around 1625. Its effective simplicity appealed to me: a small vase containing a single, elegant tulip. The scene features a butterfly and a fly: the butterfly as a metaphor for transformation, rebirth, and the soul leaving the body; the fly as a symbol of decay and the inevitability of death. Together, they represent the delicate boundary between life and death, between the spiritual and the earthly—a recurring theme in 17th-century Dutch still lifes.

"Tulip in a Vase with Butterfly" will be on display and for sale at Pulchri Studio from August 26th in the "Klein Formaat" exhibition. This exhibition format allows you to take the work home immediately after purchase. So you don't have to wait until the end of the exhibition. It is also available for purchase in Pulchri Studio's webshop.
