Triptych

"Where do we find freedom?"

This question in the call for the Rotterdam Photo Festival got me thinking about what freedom is, whether it exists and what defines it. Freedom can come from the absence of influences or restrictions, from a liberation from something. This freedom concept focuses on circumstances and the (im)possibilities to change them. Freedom can also be approached as a freedom from within, the freedom to create and observe our thoughts. There is no certainty and limited control over what happens to us. What helps us is to create freedom in our response, from our inner freedom.

To translate these thoughts into a visual expression, I looked at historical symbols, forms and imagery in philosophy and religion, such as the triptych, an altarpiece consisting of a central panel and two outer panels, and offerings in the form of flowers.

It resulted in my new work 'Triptych' consisting of two triptychs. The inner triptych consists of related images that flow into each other. This triptych is embedded by an outer triptych on a larger format. The panels of both triptychs are free-hanging.
